A shed Hunting Dream
To walk around a cedar tree and there it
is
. It possesses a certain character. An awe comes over me. I have dreamed of this
happening, and it still doesnt seem real. The endless searching for miles, days,
sometimes not finding a single shed is all but forgotten in the wake of this treasure.
Pure bliss! It has all been worth it.
I was shed hunting in an area where I knew
that this caliber of buck had existed. In fact, I told my friend Larry who was with me
that this is an area where we could come around a corner and see the Buck of Justice II
sheds lying there. When I saw the first side of the Bliss Buck, I lost it. I was jumping
around, screaming into my two-way radio. Larry must have thought a snake had bitten me.
When he arrived, I carefully picked up the shed. It had 12 points just on that one side. I
told him, "Well, it looks like well be living here until we find the other
side."
We began to grid, circle after circle, hour
after hour. Four hours and a dozen smaller sheds later, we still hadnt found the
other side. I remember estimating the point lengths in my head. I figured this side at an
86-inch typical, 118-inch non-typical without counting broken points. Another four hours
go by. As I glassed the area one last time for the day, I spotted a shed in a wash about a
mile away from where I had found the first one. I knew that was the one!
What a monster! That first side ended up
measuring 119 3/8 inches non-typical and 87 3/8-inches typical. The buck is an 11 x 12,
approximately 36 inches wide with a 24-inch inside spread. He scores 255 inches gross
non-typical and 198 inches gross typical. With all of his points restored, he would be a
260-class buck!
This has been a dream come true. What a
blissful day indeed!
