The Tony Lovstuen Whitetail Buck that was
taken in Iowa was panel scored at 307 5/8. It was originally scored at 319 but was
knocked down quite a bit. It will be the biggest whitetail ever taken by a hunter
and rank #3 overall (#1 and #2 were both found dead). This buck has been sold to
Bass Pro Shops.

Another World Record Typical Elk
for Chuck Adams? -posted 10/06/03
(Updated 03/24/04) We first informed you of Chuck's new potential record elk in early
October of 2003. His magazine feature finally hit today in the latest North American
Hunter. Chuck Adams holds claim to the current world's record typical elk for Pope
and Young scoring 409 2/8 net which was taken in Montana in 2000. Well, Chuck went back to
Montana and on September 24, 2003 arrowed a huge 6x6 that could shatter his current
record. In the article Chuck puts the score at 423 1/8 gross and 412 5/8 net typical
with main beams and inside spread each over 60 inches. The first 60-60 elk ever
taken? The bull still needs to wait to be panel scored before becoming anything
official.

Nevada Gov. Elk Tag Puts One Down!
-posted 01/06/03
Hunter and tag holder Russ Young was after this bull from the start. They finally
spotted the bull on Dec. 26th and tracked the bull for three days before putting the bull
down for good on the 29th. The bull gross scores 412 and nets 396 non-typical.
The bull is a 7x7 and has over 16" of broken points. If not broken up,
the bull would have net scored between 410-420! Russ has had a very successful year.
He also put down the huge Indian Peaks bull in Utah that officially scores 434 6/8
gross, 402 4/8 net non-typical.

288 Gross Mule Deer Taken in TEXAS!
-posted 12/30/03
Yes you heard right. I talked with the hunter last week and the buck was taken in West
Texas in Reeves County on Dec. 6th. The buck has been scored at 288 6/8 gross and
283 net non-typical. The buck has 26 total points, 8" bases, 6 1/2 years
old and just shy of 30" wide. The buck definitely has some character and looks
like a cactus buck in some ways. This buck was taken in an area where there are no high
fences at all and where some pretty big mule deer have been hanging out. This could
end up being one of the highest scoring mule deer taken by a hunter in many years - from
Texas!

Walking World Record Whitetail
Taken by Teenager! -posted 10/10/03
(Updated 12/05/03) - The legendary "Iowa Walking World Record" buck is walking
no more. The stunning non-typical whitetail buck that tantalized hunters across North
America for several years since photographs and video of the buck began circulating has
finally been tagged. The mammoth non-typical buck, which has now been officially
scored by B&C at 319 4/8 net non-typical, fell to the muzzleloader blast of
15-year-old Tony Lovstuen of Albia, Iowa, on Sept. 29 in Monroe County. This will be
the biggest whitetail ever taken by a hunter and will probably end up #3 on the all-time
list behind the Missouri Monarch and the Hole-in-the-Horn buck.

3/8" and the right is 63 3/8" long. This bull is a clean 6x6 that scores
419 3/8 gross and 410 5/8 net typical B&C. This bull is also the #2 all-time

Pope & Young Changes % Let-Off
Rule! -posted 12/04/03
Pope & Young Club has voted to override the 65% let-off rule for all potential
entries.
The proposal called for a change to the Records Program, whereby the Club would begin
accepting entries harvested by compound bows that have let-off greater than 65% (provided
they are legal, in the state/province where used, AND meet the Club's remaining definition
of a hunting bow). Any record book entry with a compound bow exceeding 65% in let-off will
be listed with an asterisk (*) in the Records and in the record books. The proposal also
called for the production of a periodic, specialty book that would contain only animals
harvested with "traditional" bows (recurve bows, longbows and self bows), in
addition to them being listed in the all-time record books.

Arizona Bulls are Taking Over the
Record Books! -posted 09/25/03
(Updated 10/10/03) Arizona is not taking a back seat when it comes to monster bulls this
year. What else would you expect. Since there are so many huge 400 plus bulls
being taken we better start listing them from Arizona and keep this a pending list as I am
sure it will continue to grow as the season continues:
1- New Pending World Record Archery Elk -
453 Gross! This huge 9x12 bull green scored 453 gross and 439 net non-typical and was
arrowed in Arizona unit 8. It was green scored by John McClendon so the score will
hold up pretty close to the final score. Unless there is a technicality that we
don't know yet, this bull will shatter the current world record non-typical for
P&Y. Current record is 420 5/8 P&Y that was just panel scored earlier this
year.
2- How about another monster bull that scores 440 gross and net scores 428
non-typical and was taken with a bow! That makes two bulls that are going to shatter
the current world's record for Pope & Young. This is a 9x9 bull. How would you
like to arrow a 428 net bull and still probably not be the world record (see above).
3- The Arizona Gov. Tag landed the first big bull on Sept. 3, 2003 scoring 420 SCI
non-typical and 415 2/8 SCI typical. The bull has a tremendous left side with a long
left G-3 point.
4- The raffle tag winner also downed a big 403 gross elk. If you can believe it the
raffle tag winner got his raffle tag out of Hunting Illustrated Magazine and sent
it in.
5- Just got information and photos of another great bull from Arizona. This bull is
a 7x7 and gross scores 403 4/8. This bull only has a 35" inside spread and
still gross scores over 400!
6- Another huge bull has been taken with an bow. This elk has huge thirds and
is a 8x7. It gross scores 430 and will net around 415 non-typical. This bull has a
unique cluster around his right base with a long extra point coming out. Awesome.
More Big 400 Bulls From Around the
West! -posted 09/23/03
It seems that every day this past week there is news of another 400 bull being taken. Here
is a rundown of some other bulls from around the West:
- 427 gross bull taken in California. This very unique bull has a lot of character
especially on the left side. It was taken on the 125,000 acre Tejon Ranch. In
2000, there was a 420 net bull taken on this same ranch.
- 416 gross bull from Washington taken with a bow.
- 402 gross bull from Montana taken with a bow. This bull has a huge split G-2 on the left
side and a lot of character.
- There are at least two bulls from Nevada that gross around 410 each. One was taken
with a bow and will net around 410.
- Got word of a big bull from Montana. Will get more information on this soon.
From what I am told it was taken with a bow and will gross 420 and net around 404
non-typical.
How Many 400 Plus Bulls Can Utah
Put Down in 2003? -posted 09/18/03
(Updated 10/03/03) Wow! Utah is off to an incredible start this elk season that is going
to turn out to be the best season ever. There are a lot of rumors going around so
let's go through just the facts and see what we know so far. The "400"
number is being said a lot this week, but for good reason. We will keep this post
active with the latest news for Utah elk that are pushing the 400 gross mark.
1- Rumors have been going around
about a huge 434 gross bull taken on the Utah/Nevada border (Indian Peaks). This is
true. A guy bought the Nevada Gov. tag and also a Utah Landowner Tag to pursue this
bull that would cross from the Nevada side to the Utah side. They located the bull
on the Utah side and the rest is history. It is a 5x8 that has a lot of palmation,
but there is a lot of difference in symmetry. This bull may be the highest grossing
bull that Utah will ever produce, yet it may not even be the state record. Because
of all of the deductions, the bull may net score around 410 but I have talked with a few
that think it may not even net 400. If you hear any rumors of an investigation by
the Fish and Game, this bull is clean. Fish and Game did double check and make sure
the bull was tagged with the correct license. This bull was shot in Utah and was
tagged with the Utah tag.
2- A huge 419 7/8 gross, 409 3/8 net (green score) 7x7 non-typical has been taken in
Southern Utah area (Beaver). This is legit and the photos are amazing. This was a
non-guided hunt - no big money tag on this one.
3- Confirmed bull taken off from Mt. Dutton that gross scores 418! This bull was
taken in the burn area where there was lush green grass up to your knees. The elk is
a 6x7 and green net scores 400 typical. This bull will duke it out with the bull
posted below as the pending state record typical.
4- A monster typical 6x6 bull has been taken in Central Utah (Manti) that is gross
(green) scoring 406 on opening morning. It has also been scored at 414 gross and 401
net, but I think they are stretching this a bit on the green score. It will be great
if it is but I think this will net in the high 390s. The bull has 25" thirds
and 57-58" main beams. Beautiful bull. This bull could become the new
state record typical for Utah (We will wait and see after the drying period - current
state record typical is 395 4/8)
5- There was a very unique bull taken on the archery hunt that gross scores 406.
It was taken on the San Juan and the bull has a third main beam. At first no
body knew how to score this bull, but confirming with P&Y concluded that the extra
main beam will cause a lot of deductions. The great bull will gross over 400 but net
score about 330.
6- There was a nice 398 gross bull taken off from the Boulder area. It will
net about 390. There are another hand full of 390 plus gross bulls taken so far
7- There is word going around about a big 400 bull taken in Northern Utah. We
have confirmed this bull taken in the Cache Valley area and is a 6x7 and green scores 409
gross and 383 net typical.

World's Record Grizzly Disqualified
from Record Book? -posted 04/23/03
The Boone and Crockett Club recently removed David F. Malzacs Worlds Record
grizzly bear from its records. Mr. Malzacs trophy scores 27-5/16 points and was
recognized as the new World Record grizzly bear on June 16, 2001. Mr. Malzacs
grizzly, which was taken on the Toklat River, Alaska, in 1998, exceeded the previous
Worlds Record by 3/16 of an inch. Apparently it was found out that Mr. Malzacs
hunting party had violated Alaska law while operating two "swamp buggies" on
their moose hunt near the Toklat and Sushana Rivers. Both rivers are protected and listed
as Anadromous Waters where motorized land vehicle traffic is restricted. Boone and
Crockett concluded that Mr. Malzac would not have taken his trophy without the illegal use
of his friends vehicles in violation of the Fair Chase standards of the Boone and
Crockett Club. Due to this action, the Worlds Record status falls back on the three
grizzly trophies that score 27-2/16 points (three-way tie).
Pope & Young Gives Alberta
Hunters the Shaft? -posted 04/08/03
It is no secret that Alberta is pumping out some huge trophy animals. Is this a
problem for Pope & Young club? Wayne Zaft arrowed a monster whitetail typical
buck in 2001 that was officially scored by a P&Y scorer at 206 6/8 net typical.
This would easily break the world record (204 4/8), but would have to go through the panel
score. In 2002, Brent Kuntz arrowed a monster bull elk in 2002 that was officially
scored after the 60-day drying period at 422 4/8 net non-typical by a P&Y
scorer. Brent's bull surpassed the world record (419 5/8) but again would have to go
to panel score to become the official world's record. Both animals were pending
world records and scored by well-respected P&Y scorer Dave Paplawski.
What happened at the panel scoring held
spring of 2003?

There have been reports of a 40-42" wide buck killed in Sanpete County above

possibly someone from Salt Lake City. If you have any info on this please drop us a
line.

New World Record Mule Deer? -posted
5/7/02
This photo has been going around the internet for quite some
time about a new world record out of Idaho. Is this buck for real? Nope!
The buck is a replica of a sculpture that was carved out of wood called the
"Wyoming Wonder". The artist sold some replicas of his sculptor to
interested buyers. Unfortunately the truth about this mounted buck hasn't followed
all of the emails that have been forwarded about this photo. How big are the antlers
anyway? They score 250 Typical points net. This score would smash the current
world record- too bad.

There was a 400 Class Bull Killed
in Utah in 2001? -posted
5/7/02
There was a nice bull elk killed in Utah fall 2001 that had a
lot of rumors that it was a legit 400 class bull that could even be the new state record.
This bull was taken above Mt. Pleasant on the Manti. Is this true?
Nope! Someone rough scored the bull and was way off. The bull has been
officially scored at 351 1/8 B&C Non-typical. An awesome bull but another 400
class well-wisher.

350 Class Mule Deer Sheds Found in
Utah? -posted 5/7/02
Is there really a set of mule deer sheds that score 350 points
from Northern Utah? We would all like to think so, but these world record class
sheds are not a legit 350 points. The sheds were found in Utah but they were
actually 250 class sheds and the owner had some fun with the antlers and added some extra
points making it look huge. Yes, the antlers are 350 class, but about 100 points
have been fabricated.

I Heard About a Mule Deer that
Could Beat the World Record? -posted
5/7/02
A few years ago there surfaced a buck that was harvested many
years ago that was finally scored. It is an impressive typical buck that was scored
at 229 7/8" Net B&C. This would beat the current world record typical which
scores 226 4/8" B&C. However, this score is not official and must go
through a panel score to become a world record. At this time, we have no knowledge
of it being panel scored or if it even is going to be panel scored by Boone &
Crockett. We did a Re-creation of this buck in our 2001 Mule Deer Calendar.
