Many Bulls Get Knocked Down at the P&Y Panel? -posted 04/21/05
I just got word about the latest Pope & Young panel scoring. There were many big bulls there at the panel and I was anxious to see how their individual scores would come out. There were some big surprises. Chuck Adams' bull from 2003 was a pending new world record typical. Green score put it around 412 net typical. How did it fair at the panel? How about 399 1/8 net typical P&Y and will go #5. It looks like there was a discrepancy on the inside spread. The beams flared out, which is one of the most common problems on scoring an elk. How about Nick Franklin's pending world record non-typical bull? Nick's bull was officially entered with Boone & Crockett at 444 4/8 net B&C. However, at the Pope & Young panel it got trimmed down to 442 0/8 net but still makes it as the new world record archery bull with ease. Two bulls that got knocked down was Clay Heuett's bull. Originally scored and entered with Boone & Crockett at 429 6/8 net B&C, Clay's bull panel scored at 422 6/8 net and will take over the #2 spot by just an inch or two. Jeff Thorpe's Washington bull also got knocked down from an accepted 421 7/8 Boone & Crockett score to 412 4/8 net at the Pope & Young panel. Instead of a possible #3, Jeff's bull is now #8 overall and still the WA state record. Kind of interesting how the Pope & Young panel changed the scores on many of these bulls that were panel scored by Boone & Crockett last year. I thought they used the same scoring system? They do, but it is interesting why the two scores from both clubs are so different.

Mexico Monster Typical Mule Deer a New Record? -posted 02/24/04
If you haven't seen it yet, there is an email going around showing a magnificent mule deer buck from taken in Sonora, Mexico just last month. There is different versions of just how big this buck is. Some claim it is a 230 class typical. We have also heard 225 gross and 220 net typical. We are going to be finding out shortly what is really up with this beautiful buck. 402 Net Typical Bull Elk Taken with a Bow? -posted 01/03/05
Just talked with the hunter who took this amazing bull. You are probably thinking an Arizona bull...nope. This bull was taken up North in Alberta in 2004. The bull officially scores 427 5/8 gross and 402 5/8 net typical. It also scores 419 2/8 typical SCI. The bull has three abnormal points off from the main 6x6 frame giving about 10 inches of deductions. If not for these small extra points, this would have been the new world record. Right now it will go about #4 all-time for Pope & Young.
(updated 03/22/05) Just heard back from the hunter (Will Huppertz) that his bull was recently panel scored in Missouri by Pope & Young and his score is going to hold at 402 5/8 net typical. This bull will be the new #3 typical archery bull in the world.

New Archery State Record Non-Typical Elk for Utah? -posted 02/24/04
There have been some great bulls taken in 2004 from Utah. Early on there was word of two new state records for archery: Dallen Baugh's 395 gross, 385 2/8 net non-typical and Kurt Delucero's 398 6/8 gross, 390 4/8 net typical P&Y. Both of these bulls would overtake the state records in the typical and non-typical category. However, there is a bull that has just been officially scored over the weekend that will shake things up even more. A bull taken off from the Manti has been officially scored at 410 gross and 401 1/8 net non-typical. Wow! That shatters the state record non-typical for archery. More to come...

New World Record SCI Fair Chase Bull Taken in 2004? -posted 02/24/04
If you have never heard of the bull Godzilla, then you will be shortly because you will read the full story in the Best of 2004 issue of Hunting Illustrated. This amazing bull was taken by Robert Hartwig in Arizona with a longbow. The bull scores 464 3/8 SCI and just overtook Nick Franklin's bull as the new #1 SCI fair chase bull. This bull has a crazy point coming off the right side. The official score for Pope & Young is still being determined. Depending on how this point is scored, this bull could score either 405 net, 418 net or even 429 net non-typical. We will have to wait and see, but hopefully this bull will get the benefit of the doubt. It is truly spectacular.

Was a 250 Class Mule Deer Taken in Utah in 04? -posted 01/19/04
We heard about this buck for some time, but never could find out what the score really was. Many numbers of 250, 230, etc. were being heard. We just found out the official score on this legit buck. The buck was taken with a muzzleloader and scores 255 gross, 246 2/8 net non-typical B&C. Wow! The buck is 28 1/2" wide. You will be seeing more on this buck a little later.

New #2 Typical Elk for Utah? -posted 01/11/04
A bull taken on the Boulder has been officially scored at 407 gross and 401 net typical. This will be the new #2 typical in Utah. The bull had a small 1 1/2" abnormal point that caused just enough deductions to keep it out of being the new #1 overall and beating the Gilson bull at 402 4/8 net typical taken in 2003.

Monster 457 Bull Taken in Arizona? -posted 10/06/04
(Updated 10/12/04) Could this be the "Bull of the Year"?  Rumors about this bull have been going around the Internet and people wondering if this bull is legit. No photos have been let out, but this bull is legit and big.   Green score on this bull is 447 gross and 425 net non-typical.  We just talked with the outfitter and the bull has just been scored by an official measurer.  It still has not been the 60 days, but the updated score is 457 3/8 gross and 420 net non-typical.  Yes, that is really a 457 gross score!  The sheds on this bull and footage taken from last year show that this bull was possibly on the way down.  Last year they estimated this bull to gross over 470!  This bull was taken with a longbow.  See this bull first in a future issue of Hunting Illustrated!
(Updated 01/11/05) - This bull has been officially scored by SCI. Yes, this bull will be the new SCI world record free ranging bull elk. The official score is 464 3/8 SCI. Unbelievable. It seems like the bull just keeps getting bigger and bigger. The official score for Pope & Young has yet to come. However, due to symetry deductions, the bull is projected to gross over 460 bull will net around 427 and be the new #3 in the world. Official score is coming soon. Check out a full story and pics coming up in the Best of 2004 issue of Hunting Illustrated!

425 Gross Bull Taken in Utah - New State Record? -posted 10/06/04
There has been a nice non-typical bull taken off the Dutton in Utah that has been rough scored a couple of times at both 420 and 425 gross B&C.  However, this bull has just been scored by an official measurer and the updated score is 413 gross and 400 net non-typical.  The bull has to still wait the 60-day drying period before it can be officially measured, but this is more of an accurate score than what was originally let on.  Look for a full story on this bull in a future issue of Hunting Illustrated.
(Updated 01/11/05) - This bull has been officially scored at 414 4/8 gross and 403 4/8 net non-typical. This bull will be the new #4 for Utah.

Can You Believe This - 289 NET Mule Deer from 2004? -posted 10/12/04
Pics have recently surfaces of an incredible mule deer taken the first week of October.   A female hunter on a Wyoming Indian Reservation harvested one of the most amazing mule deer of all time!  Speaking with her husband today, this buck was officially green scored at 294 gross and 289 3/8 net non-typical.  The buck is 40 1/2" wide and has three drop tines with incredible mass - just the epitome of trophy mule deer.   She shot at the buck and missed four times.  Luck was on their side and the found the buck a few days later and one more shot put the buck down.  This is the biggest buck taken in Wyoming in 80 Years and probably the second largest non-typical buck taken by a female.
(Updated 01/03/05) - Here is a detailed breakdown of the official stats for this buck. They are waiting for word from B&C whether it will need to be panel scored. Scorable points R = 17 L = 14, however there are 19 and 16, the ones not scorable from this scorer were real close. Inside spread 27 4/8", greatest spread 40 1/8", tip to tip 22 7/8", abnormal points 86 5/8", grosses 291 5/8, nets 285 3/8. Probably go #3 all-time for Wyoming non-typical. See this buck first in a future issue of Hunting Illustrated!

Monster 407 Alberta Buck - Is This For Real? -posted 12/29/04
There is a photo of a huge non-typical mule deer going around the Internet. This buck looks to easily go over the 300 inch mark. The photo looks pretty legit, but we have confirmed that this is a fake fabricated buck and is not real.

Idaho Both-Books-Buck? -posted 11/24/04
What does it mean to be a 'both-books-buck"? Well, you have to be able to NET score as both a typical and non-typical, even with the deductions. There is a great buck that was just taken in Idaho that could make it. This buck is 38 1/2" wide and is a 5x7 point not counting eyeguards. The buck has been officially green scored at 230 6/8 net non-typical and also 197 4/8 net typical B&C. The reason this buck can pull this off is due to the 214 2/8 net main frame! Pics will be posted as soon as we get permission to post them.
(Updated 12/29/04) - It has been understood that this buck has recently been confiscated by the Fish & Game and is under investigation. The hunter had a Super Tag that allowed him to hunt all seasons, but only had to hunt the area with the appropriate weapon for that season/unit. There is some allegations that this buck crossed into a unit that was during a muzzleloader hunt and the hunter shot it with a rifle. This is only speculation. We hope that this will be cleared up and the buck is legit and legal. We are keeping our fingers crossed because this is a spectacular mule deer.

Utah Sportsmans Tag Knocks Down a Beauty Buck? -posted 11/24/04
James Schoule was the lucky hunter who drew the Utah Sportsmans tag giving him the chance to hunt mule deer similar to the Governor tag holder (but without the $60,000 price tag). James hunted on his own with the help of family and friends and ended up taking a monster buck on the Henry Mountains. The buck is about 34" wide, 10x10 and has been green scored at 248 3/8 gross non-typical. Not bad for a non-guided hunt.
(Updated 12/29/04) - We have found out that this buck is not as big as originally thought. The buck has now been rescored and comes in around 232 gross and 225 net non-typical. We will confirm this more as soon as we find out.

Record Velvet Typical Buck Taken in Nevada? -posted 8/28/04
A monster buck has been taken during Nevada's archery mule deer season.  The first big buck taken this year.  This buck was taken by Greg Krogh of Arizona and has a green unofficial score of 211 1/8 gross and 206 0/8 net typical.  This buck was taken in the velvet and could easily challenge the current world record for Pope & Young.   The current world record for Pope & Young for hardhorned antler is 203 1/8 taken in Colorado.  The world record velvet typical is 202 6/8 taken in Saskatchewan.
(Updated 12/29/04) - This buck has been officially scored at 202 3/8 net typical. There is some confusion with Pope & Young right now as to what buck is the world record velvet buck. However, it will be the new #2.

A 430 Broken Tine Bull From Utah? -posted 11/24/04
Yes, you hear correct. An unbelievable elk was taken in southern Utah that unofficially green scores 432 gross. The bull has four broken tines that add up to 20-30 inches. This could have been a 450 plus gross bull? More information coming...
(Update 03/22/04) This bull has been officially scored at 418 gross B&C. He was not scored as big due to an error on the inside spread when green scored. The bull's main beams flare out at the tips and was a cause for some slight confusion on how this would be scored. The bull is just huge - even with the broken points that would have put him high in the record books.

444 San Carlos Bull Taken? -posted 10/12/04
It is true.  A monstrous bull that is quite amazing in character was taken on the San Carlos Apache Reservation.  Speaking with the hunter, the green score is 444 5/8 gross and 419 net non-typical.  The bull has 11 scorable points on each side.

New Utah State Record Typical Mule Deer? -posted 10/06/04
We reported earlier of a giant typical mule deer taken in northern Utah in September.   Reports are saying this buck could challenge the state record typical with a green score of 220 gross and 213 net B&C and is a whopping 38" wide.  We have also heard that these numbers are a little too high and this buck will net score around 209 and is 36" wide.  We will just have to wait and see what the final numbers come in on this great buck.  The Utah state record typical currently scores 212 1/8 B&C.   Check out the photos of this buck that have been circulating the internet and see for yourself.
(Updated 03/22/04) The buck has been officially scored at 221 4/8 gross and 209 7/8 net typical and will be the new #3 typical for Utah. The buck is also 40 2/8 inches wide!

Monster 428 Bull Taken in Utah? -posted 9/24/04
A great 8x10 monster bull was taken on the west side of Utah.  The pics on this beast are amazing.  The bull green gross scores 428 B&C.  But if you can believe it, the front left brow tine was broken completely off losing at least 20 inches.  This bull would have gross scored probably over 440 and net scored in the high 420's and shattering the state record.  However, due to this broken tine, the bull might not even net over 400.  We will see what the official score on this bull will be in 60 days.  Look for a full story on this bull in a future issue of Hunting Illustrated.

Season Starting Out to Be Amazing! -posted 9/16/04
(updated 9/24/04The archery deer season is in full swing and the elk hunts are starting to pick up.   A lot of great bucks and bulls are hitting the ground.  The big news is all of the monster velvet typical archery mule deer that are being taken.  Here is a quick rundown of what has been reported being taken in addition to what has already been reported earlier this month:
- Another possible world record archery typical from Colorado.  Said to go around 205 net typical.
- Got word Monday morning (Sept 20th) that three 400-class bulls were taken in Arizona.   A 429, 411 and 402 gross bulls taken during the archery hunt.
- A 33" buck from Utah that green scores 211 gross and 199 4/8 net typical.   Could challenge the archery state record.
- Reports of a huge 38" typical buck gross scoring 220 with a net score around 210 from Utah.  This is an early rifle hunt and the buck could challenge the state record.
- 205 gross, 195 net typical archery buck from Saskatchewan - top 3 typical from SK.
- A Nevada elk has been taken green scoring 410 gross and 405 net non-typical
- Reports of a monster 413 gross bull from New Mexico taken off the Gila
- A potential Utah state record non-typical archery elk was taken on the Boulder unit.   Green score is 395 gross and 385 net non-typical.  Another 390 gross bull was taken with a bow on the Dutton.

Monster 295 Mule Deer Taken in Arizona? -posted 9/8/04
If you can believe it, the Governor Tag Holder for Arizona just knocked down a monster 295 velvet mule deer that has a spread of 40 1/8 inches.  The buck is believed to be only 5 1/2 years old and was originally spotted from a trail cam photo.  The guides had been watching and patterning the big buck for months leading up to the hunt.

Beautiful Utah Velvet Typical Buck Taken? -posted 8/30/04
There has been a huge typical mule deer taken on opening day of the Utah General Archery Season.  Gary Wilson harvested this buck in northern Utah.  I talked with Gary today and confirmed the score on the buck.  There is some confusion about the score of this buck because a taxidermist scored this buck wrong and thought this buck would score 225 gross and 214 net typical!  Because of this some rumors are going around that this could shatter the world's record.  This is not true.  The buck is a 4x5 point, 31-inch wide, and has been rough green scored at 203 4/8 gross and 196 2/8 net typical.  There is an extra kicker point on the left side that will deduct this buck out of state record contention.  We will have to wait the 60-day drying period to see just where this buck will fall in the record books.  The state record for velvet typical mule deer in Utah is 199 7/8 net P&Y.
(Updated 03/22/05) This great buck has been officially scored at 198 gross and 187 3/8 net typical velvet.
