I was going through a first time experience as a licensed guide for Elite outfitters from Ruidoso, New Mexico. My anticipation and stress had reached an all time high as I had no idea what to expect; trying to bring in a bull for someone I did not know. I have been bowhunting elk for the last 14 years so I knew I had the experience...

Ask Mr. Mule Deer

Q. Is a 7mm Mag. a good elk gun and up to what range?
Ronald Gronitz - Waukesha, WI

A. Ronald, the 7mm Mag. is one of the most popular rifles found around elk camps. It has long range capabilities combined with plenty of knock down power at reasonable hunting ranges. When I say reasonable hunting ranges, I mean ranges that you feel comfortable in shooting and placing your shots for quick clean kills. For most of us average hunters the 7mm has more capabilities than we have the skill to use.

John McClendon & Son's Guide Service

Description and Services:
McClendon Elk Hunts offers the serious hunter a chance to hunt trophy animals in the great Southwest. We gear our pre-season scouting, area selection and hunt locations towards trophy selection. Our hunts are conducted from tent camps, accessible by four-wheel drive vehicles. Hunting is done on foot or horseback.   We have two rifle hunts, the early hunt is during the rut in late September and the late hunt is in November. The early hunt is usually the best. However, it is extremely hard to draw for. In the last four years, our success ratio is better than 80 percent on 6x6 bulls.
