Skinning Your Game Animal

Home > Hunting > General Hunting Guide > Skinning Your Game Animal
You first need a sharp knife. Hang the deer by one leg and start by making a cut through the skin on the hind quarters.
Cut down each leg by pulling and cutting at the same time. Do not cut into the meat

Repeat the process all the way down to the neck and either cut the neck off or cut the hide at the neck.

Cutting the Cape for Mounting

Transporting your animal can be the hardest part of the hunt.   When you hiked in 10 miles and have no horses, that big buck seems even bigger now.   You will need to pack him out in game sacks and put it on a pack frame and hope that you have twenty people with you to help.

If you want to mount the head, make the following incisions (see left).  The hide should be removed as soon as possible to cool down the meat.  If you are hunting when the weather is unseasonably warm then you may need to get the meat off the mountain as soon as possible to ensure the meat is not spoiled.

Do not drag an animal if you are going to mount it.   That could easily ruin the hide and make a scroungy looking cape.  When you get back to camp try and hang the animal high and let it drain completely.  Do not let the insides remain wet or it could cause the meat to sour.
