Close Encounter: Coyote Attack

I was out one day doing a little coyote hunting. From past experience I knew how smart coyotes are with their keen senses of sight and smell. They can sneak up on you without you even knowing until it is almost too late. You always need to be alert and ready.

While I was calling, a coyote came in from behind me and then around to my side. I didn't hear it or see it. It came up right next to me and as I caught movement in the corner of my eye I suddenly flinched. When I jumped from being startled, the coyote instinctively attacked thinking I was the rabbit.

I just barely got my gun barrel out in time for it to bite some steel instead of taking a chunk out of my leg. The tooth mark on my gun barrel assures that I will never forget that time when I became the hunted.
