Orin Reid took
this giant typical buck near John Day, OR. in 1937. Orin was working in the timber
industry as a logger in Kinzua, OR. In the good old days, Kinzua was a thriving logging
town in North Central Oregon. Orin and several friends decided to go on a hunting trip in
search of some big mule deer bucks. They traveled about 100 miles to the southeast of
Kinzua into the upper John Day River area. Orin harvested
one of the largest mule deer of all-time. This tremendous buck has a net typical score of 231 1/8, after
deducting the abnormal points of 11 7/8, his final score is 219 2/8. His right antler
total is 104 5/8; his left antler total is 103 1/8 with a 33 2/8 inside spread. Both of
this buck's main beams are 28 1/8, with the inside spread exceeding the length of either
beam. His spread credit is 28 1/8. The abnormal point total is 11 7/8; he has two burr
points on each antler just over two inches and a double eye guard on his left antler just
over two inches. This 7 x 8 point mule deer has a greatest spread of 36 1/8 with 24 inch
G-2s on both antlers.
Unfortunately, Orin Reid never knew the official score of
his deer or that it would rank as one of the largest mule deer ever taken. This deer and
hundreds of other big game animals throughout Oregon, Washington and Idaho have recently
surfaced because of our efforts in producing individual record books for each of these
states.
In 1994 Northwest Big Game began measuring and collecting
information for the Record Books for Oregon, Washington and Idaho's Big Game Animals.
Currently, they attend all 16 Sportsmen's Shows throughout the Pacific Northwest. We visit
each of these locations annually, inviting people to bring in their horns, heads and
antlers to be officially measured and recorded in their respective state records. This
buck and 20 of the largest big game animals ever taken will be featured in the Tour of the
Northwest's Big Game Animals. For more information about the Tour of the Northwest and
record books check out their website at www.nwbiggame.com or contact David M. Morris at
