Close Encounter:
Coyote Attack!
by Daren Tuttle
<----- Sound Off |
The opening of the muzzleloader hunt found me
walking down a bare ridge looking for two 4x4 bucks that I had previously scouted. As I
reached the point, I noticed out of the corner of my left eye some movement coming from a
side canyon. |

Up the face of the canyon
came a big coyote with a magpie bird swooping down and pestering it. On its left side I
could see two red areas and noticed it was having a hard time walking up the trail. I was
just about to put it out of its misery when I heard a crashing sound. The two bucks I had
been waiting for were breaking out of cover and heading up and over the ridge. |
I figured I would
drop down and go around the other side of the ridge hoping to get a shot as the
bucks circled around. As I dropped down the canyon, I suddenly heard growling and looked up
in time to see the coyote leap down the trail at me! I had time to lift my 50-caliber
muzzleloader to my hip and shoot. The smoke from the blast blocked the sight of the coyote
for a moment, but I could still hear crashing in the scrub oak next to me. |
I reloaded as fast
as I could while shaking terribly. By the time I was able to fumble the cap back
in place and look around, the coyote was dead no more than three feet from my feet. I
decided I had enough hunting for one day and headed to the truck. |
